All ear. Ear Training by getting to know some scales and exiting jazz chords. Only singing is required. No Theory only practice.

Matthias Becker is the founder and manager of VoKAL ToTAL, the famous German vocal jazz quartet. He has a diploma in choir conducting and a musicology PhD in „choir music in jazz“. He is giving national and international classes in music for choirmasters, choirs and vocal ensembles, and has a publishing company for international Choir music.

Bass Beat – Daniel Barke

The central focus of this workshop is the special tasks of the lowest voice in a modern vocal ensemble (usually bass or alto). Of course, the workshop is open to everyone, because it is also interesting for the high voices to understand what special function is assigned to the lower voice. Topics will include: timing, groove, rhythm, breathing, stakes, basic beatbox grooves with combined bass tones and song accompaniment with voice.

Daniel Barke is a German choral conductor, graduated jazz- and pop-musician and lectures throughout Germany. In addition to his work as a singer and beatboxer, he is a saxophonist, composer and arranger. In 2007 he founded the vocal group tonalrausch, which since 2015 is known under the name of VOXID. This year he was nominated to win an A Cappella Music Award in the category Bass.

The artistic producer in vocal music – Andrea Figallo

This seminar focuses on the role of the artistic producer in recording choral music. The seminar will cover the responsibilities of the artistic producer, creative aspects of recording choral music, collaboration in recording choral music, and how to put all of these aspects together to create successful choral music recordings. The seminar will begin with an introduction to the topic, followed by a discussion on the role of the artistic producer in the recording process. The next section will cover the art of recording choral music. Collaboration in recording choral music will be emphasized, with tips provided for effective collaboration between the artistic producer, the choir director, and the recording engineer. Participants will gain a better understanding of the role of the artistic producer in the choral music recording process and how to collaborate effectively with others to create successful recordings.

For the past 11 year Andrea Figallo has been the bass singer and vocal percussionist of the Flying Pickets. He has studied voice and drama in Bologna, conducted choirs and performed with various vocal ensembles in Italy and Switzerland. Before becoming the youngest member of the Flying Pickets he worked as a studio singer for international advertising campaigns and was part of the internationally renowned Italian a cappella sextet Jazz’n Jam. Today he is a sought-after vocal coach in seminars, workshops and master classes. He also appeared on Bobby McFerrin’s new CD “VOCAbuLarieS”. Starting with 2013 Andrea has been singing bass with the famous German vocal group “Wise Guys”.

A tribute to Brazilian trumpet player Claudio Roditi, and an introduction to the language of scatting. Learn the language of scat while you sight read and digest four different Samba blues melodies written by or for Claudio; ranging in difficulty and wordless. This class emphasizes the teaching of instrumentally- influenced syllables to the singer who has never improvised before. Once you have these solid musical ideas floating through your brain, it´s a little easier to step out on your own! The trick in this class is getting everyone to subdivide exactly the same, so all four tunes dance simultaneously!!!

Kim Nazarian is a world renowned, Grammy nominated jazz performing and recording artist, educator and clinician. Besides her work as a sought-after solo vocalist, she has been performing all over the world with the vocal group, “New York Voices“ (NYV), for more than 35 years. She is a jazz voice teacher for Vocal Jazz Majors at both Ithaca College and SUNY Fredonia.

Ever heard of the Complete Vocal Technique (CVT)?
The vocal technique from Denmark presents a new pedagogical approach to voice training to help singers in their search for the desired sound with concrete tips and tricks. In this 90 min introductory course, the basic principles and sound types (modes) are presented in a structured way, analyzed and tried out in guided exercises. So if you´ve always wanted to expand your own sound spectrum of the voice, you can test in this workshop to what extent CVT is a reliable help.

Miriam Steinkühler-Fuchsberger has been teaching at ipop of MDW since 2017, built up the pop singing class and the pop choir of the Linz Music School „United Voices“ and performed for many years with the ladies a cappella quartet „Velvet Voices“. Musically, her heart beats above all for the wide spectrum of gospel music as well as choral and ensemble music.

The Icebreaker workshop takes the book of the same name by Tine Fris-Ronsfeld and Kristoffer Fynbo Thorning as a starting point. Icebreakers are games and exercises that bring people together. During Icebreakers, participants share new experiences. Icebreakers create a positive atmosphere through music, movement and play and strengthen the social relationships of a group. During the workshop, some of the most popular Icebreakers will be introduced, providing many ideas for expansion, simplification, and a range of development opportunities to create a good mood in the group. In addition, basic musical skills such as rhythm, singing and improvisation will be taught.

Tine Fris-Ronsfeld is a professional singer, vocal arranger and choir leader based in Denmark. Tine is co-conductor and singer in the world-renowned choir Vocal Line, conductor of the a cappella ensemble Lyt and singer in the award-winning vocal group Postyr. She arranges for leading international pop and jazz choirs and is also known for her catchy compositions for Postyr. Tine has more than 20 years of experience teaching singers, choirs and vocal groups at all levels in Europe, the USA and Asia.

Ready, Set: SING!!! – Ray (Yuan-Lei) Chu

Ever wanted to master a song in the shortest amount of time? Mr. Ray Chu will teach you how to sing a contemporary a cappella song within 30 minutes. You don’t believe me? See for yourself!

Mr. Chu, the founder of the Taiwan Choral Music Center, teacher of a cappella music and author of ‘Chord Singing’ – his unique method of teaching contemporary a cappella without scores, will teach you how to sing an a cappella song without any score, will explain how to easily learn a new song within the shortest amount of time and will show you skills, how to make a song ‘more juicy’.

Mr. Chu will give you a taste of his diverse methods, for example using the numbering solfège system used in Asia.

Mr. Ray (Yuan-Lei) Chu is the art director of the pop/ jazz development department at the Taiwan Choral Music Center (TCMC), a coral conductor and trainer of contemporary a cappella. His expertise of many years’ standing was gained through studies in Taiwan and the United States and lifelong experiences.

Pop and jazz choir music often provides room for solo spots and improvised parts. Sometimes choir singers find it hard to work up the courage and seize the opportunity to improvise. As a well experienced improvising artist Tanja loves to familiarise singers with her method of getting started with improvisation and taking your first steps in that direction. Learn more about how to begin improvising in a playful way while practicing music theory at
the same time. Explore and develop your improvisation skills starting with easy exercises. This workshop will help you to get in touch with your own creativity and bring your ideas to life.

Raised in Halle/Saale, Tanja Pannier studied jazz singing in Weimar with Prof. Jeff Cascaro and Michael Schiefel and continued her vocal and composition studies with Prof. David Friedman and Agnes Heginger at the Berlin University of the Arts. In 2008 she released her first solo album „Invisible“ and performed concerts in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Hungary, Canada, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and China.
The Berlin-based singer, composer, arranger and vocal coach is a founding member of the multiple international award-winning a cappella ensemble Klangbezirk and vocal lecturer for Jazz & Pop at the Berlin University of the Arts.
